Technical Information
Hair fibers grow from the hair bulb. Both the hair bulb and the hair fiber is located in the hair follicle, which is deeply rooted in the subcutaneous tissue of the scalp. The actual synthesis of the hair cells occurs deep within the hair bulb. The newly formed cells migrate upward in the hair follicle, away from the bulb. They elongate, receive melanin from the melanocytes and finally grow out of the scalp as the hair fibers we see.
The human body naturally produces male and female hormones. The most known male hormone is testosterone. The bloodstream transports testosterone to the scalp, where hair is being formed. At this stage, testosterone converts to the more active hormone DHT. An access of DHT builds up on the scalp, starts to close the openings in which hair gets formed. The result in the opening becomes narrow and smaller.
Androgen hormones (like testosterone) produced by the adrenals, ovaries and testes are transported into the hair follicle area. In the hair follicle, 5 alpha reductase (an enzyme) coverts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). An excess of DHT build up increases the rate of hair thinning over time.
The most common form of hair loss, androgenic alopecia, is genetic and is linked to hormones call androgens = male hormones.
Result: An excess of DHT that builds up on the scalp.
